Practical Placement
-
Practical placement, as explained by the Victorian Department of Education and Training, is structured workplace learning that provides students with first-hand experience and on the job, training relating to their course. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to implement the skills they are learning about, gain confidence with their future role within their chosen industry, develop their job-related skills, and to gain an insight into how the industry works before they graduate. FYI Training arranges student’s placements with trusted networks that are reliable and understand what it takes to support students and provide them with the best possible experience. This is to ensure that all FYI Training graduates understand the expectations of the industry and have the confidence and necessary knowledge to provide high quality care and education in the Early Childhood industry.
-
Students are required to complete a total of 176 hours of practical placement within the Early Childhood Education and Care sector. This will be in a long day care service catering to children under the age of 5 years. Practical placement hours in a Childcare service range from 6:00am – 6:00pm, students must complete an 8-hour day and shifts will be set between these times. FYI Training attempts to arrange placement as close to the student’s home address listed on their enrolment as possible, however this could be up to half an hour travel by car.
Practical placement is only able to be completed during the week and is unavailable on the weekends (Monday – Friday only).
Students are required to successfully pass a Working with Children’s Check and supply a copy of their WWC to FYI Training prior to the commencement of practical placement. All students must also supply their COVID vaccination certificate, and any other immunisations as requested by the service.
-
Placement is designed to allow students to complete the full 176 hours within the course duration. It is structured to give students the opportunity to apply the strategies and techniques they learn throughout the course in a real-world setting.
This approach helps students build on their knowledge and skills, boosting both their abilities and confidence, with mentors available to provide support during the placement.
